Welcome to Kenya

Concern Universal has worked in Kenya since 2000. Despite many challenges, its capital Nairobi has grown steadily to become an increasingly important trade hub. However, not everyone in Kenya benefits from economic growth.

Kenya hosts the largest refugee population in the world. The host communities struggle to survive while the majority of aid is given to refugees. The region’s hostile natural environment brings recurring drought as well as flooding during the rains. These conditions put pressure on already scarce resources. Around half of the population suffer food shortages and a third of the population lack safe water.

In some regions it is a 20 mile round-trip walk to see a doctor. Those most vulnerable are mothers and children. A woman is 40 times more likely to die during childbirth in Kenya than the UK. A third of all new HIV cases every year are children.

Funders

We know from decades of experience that by working with others – and pooling our expertise and resources – we can achieve much more than we ever could on our own. That might mean working with small, grassroots organisations that have a better understanding of the local context, or joining with other international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to reach greater numbers of people with our campaign messages.
