October 15 is a Global Hand washing day, initiative started by The Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap (PPPHW) in 2008, which is aiming to raise awareness about importance of hand washing with soap.
Every year people in more than 100 countries participate in various activities and develop more creative ways to wash hands with soap.
It is really important to wash your hands. To start with, hand washing is the most efficient way to stop spreading infections and viruses, making it more effective than any vaccine in the world. Hand washing helps to remove germs that transmitted on contact and cause diseases such as diarrhea, sickness bug, respiratory infections, and other very serious illnesses including Ebola. Millions of people are contracting these illnesses every year all over the world.
According to UNICEF, diarrhea and respiratory tract infections are the two biggest causes of death in children under five in the developing countries, killing one child every thirty seconds. Raising awareness about importance of hand washing will help to reach the Millennium Development Goal to reduce amongst under fives by two thirds by 2015.
You should always wash your hands if:
• After using the toilet, or cleaning it.
• When hands are visibly dirty or contaminated.
• After sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose.
• Before the meals
• After touching raw meat, particularly poultry, most common source of salmonella.
• After handling animals/birds or cleaning their waste
• After contact with sick people
How to wash your hands properly?
• Remove any jewellery
• Always use soap and lather it generously.
• Wash thoroughly between your fingers and scrub under your nails.
• Use warm running water when possible.
• Hands should be washed for minimum of 15 seconds. Which children, you can always suggest to them singing a little son, such as Twinkle Twinkle or Happy Birthday.
So act now and help to raise the awareness in schools and your local community about importance of hand washing. You can get more information on hand washing and plenty of digital materials to plan your Global Handwashing Day on the official website www.globalhandwashing.org
