What We Do
Finances
Where does Concern Universal get its money from?
Our income comes from a variety of sources. Last year, we raised approximately 80% or our income from the EU, government grants and other major institutions. We raised the remaining 20% from Trusts and Foundations and businesses (12%) and individuals (5%). (Approximately 4% of our income was micro-finance income from Concern Universal Microfinance Operation (CUMO) in Malawi.)
What do you spend your income on? (Where does my money go?)
Last year, 92% of our total expenditure went directly on charitable activities in our nine country programmes overseas. The remaining 8% was spent on management and administration, fundraising and governance in the UK as well as development education and awareness raising in UK schools. For a full breakdown of which countries view the Expenditure by Country pie chart in finances at a glance. This expenditure enabled us to work with over 2 million people to improve health, reduce hunger, improve respect for rights, build skills and reduce vulnerability. For a breakdown of expenditure by sector and the number of people helped in these ways, view the pie charts above. (Please note these show last years’ figures and are currently being updated.)
How do I know my money goes where I want it to? (How do you avoid corruption?)
Concern Universal has staff and offices in every country of operation, who work in partnership with effective, trusted, locally-based organisations over many years. All programme expenditure is budgetted in advance, monitored and audited. Full accounts are consolidated in the UK and independently audited.
How much do you keep in reserves? (What is your reserves policy?)
Our aim is to hold 25 to 50% of ‘support costs’ in reserves. This is to protect our programmes and the people who benefit from them and work with Concern Universal against the risk of an unexpected reduction in income or cashflow. (The underlying rationale for the amount held in reserves is, in the event of a catastrophic collapse in funding, we would be able to cover the costs of winding down all operations over a minimum of 3 months.) Currently we hold approximately £500,000 in reserves.
Get Involved
Corporate partnerships
How is Concern Universal different to other charities?
Put simply, we’re small enough to be flexible, but large enough to make a difference. We ensure our major supporters get direct access to our senior staff across the world. We are interested in long term, sustainable partnerships and so we invest time and expertise to ensure there are maximum benefits on both sides.
What can my company get in return for partnering with you?
We report back on all the work that our partners support, and always seek to demonstrate social return on investment. We regularly visit the UK offices of our partners to ensure things are on track and offer events to inspire staff. We ensure partners are getting a good profile through our own digital channels, adding value to the partnership wherever we can.
How much does your charity spend on admin?
We are one of the lowest in the business. Last year we spent just 8% of our turnover on administrative costs, so you can be sure that supporting us offer the very best value for money.
Our company only supports UK causes, does that rule us out?
Not at all. We have a vibrant education programme here in the UK showing the relevance of international development to schoolchildren. This utilises volunteers and also requires financial support. In addition, we have a very small UK team and so always have volunteering opportunities on our books if people want to give time to our cause in the UK.
Philanthropy
How much influence will I have over where my gift is spent?
As much as you require, as it is very important for us to build long term relationships with philanthropists. We are always very clear with our donors about our current needs and seek to agree the parameters of any significant donation in the initial stages of the relationship.
How do you keep in touch with your major donors?
We do two London breakfasts each year for our major donors, which offer a unique insight into our work. In addition we correspond and meet up individually with major donors, offering an insider briefing and full updates on the aspects of our work that particularly interests them. We take our cue from our donors, some prefer more contact than others and we respect that.
Where does the majority of your income come from?
The vast majority of our turnover comes from major international institutions, which fund large scale development interventions. For example, the Global Sanitation Fund, the World Food Programme, the European Union or international government aid budgets.
How do you measure success?
All the work we do is subject to success measures and KPIs. We do base line surveys, qualitative and quantitative research and evaluations and also, wherever possible, document our projects with photos.
