Welcome to Guinea
Guinea is one of the poorest countries in the world. It receives less Overseas Development Assistance than many other African countries. Concern Universal works in three regions: Middle Guinea, Upper Guinea and the Forest Region.
The majority of the population live in rural areas and are heavily dependent on agriculture. A third of the population are going hungry, while poor water sanitation and hygiene affects health and well-being. Guinea is a country plagued by cholera. The most recent cholera outbreak in 2012 led to 6,599 cases and 121 deaths.
With over half the population living in poverty (and 20% living in extreme poverty), our work focuses on developing people’s skills to feed their families; providing clean water; educating people about hygiene and sanitation; and helping communities prepare emergency responses for extreme weather. We have helped eliminate cholera from one area of the Forest Region of Guinea.

We know from decades of experience that by working with others – and pooling our expertise and resources – we can achieve much more than we ever could on our own. That might mean working with small, grassroots organisations that have a better understanding of the local context, or joining with other international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to reach greater numbers of people with our campaign messages.
