Welcome to Nigeria

Despite being Africa’s largest oil-producing nation, more than half of Nigeria’s people remain in poverty. With a fractured history of ethnic and religious conflict, Nigerians face many hardships. Access to clean water and sanitation are one of the biggest challenges across the country. Around 100 million Nigerians (two-thirds of the population) have no access to improved sanitation and a large portion of the population practice open defecation, spreading of preventable diseases and contributing to high infant mortality rates.

Concern Universal has worked in Nigeria since 1999. Concern Universal works to empower women and communities to voice their rights, promote good sanitation and hygiene practices to reduce water-borne diseases, and tackle environmental destruction in Nigeria’s depleting mangrove forests.
